What do you understand by the terminology absolute value? The absolute value of a real number p is denoted by p or notion is p and is defined as the unsigned portion of x. One thing to note about absolute value is that bars are not parentheses and in many cases don’t consider as parentheses. Whenever, you take an absolute value of a number, you finish it with either a positive number or a zero. Two methods are used to define absolute value. One is geometric definition and other is mathematical definition. In geometrical definition, we will think of p as the distance of p from the origin on a number line and for distance we always use a positive value. In mathematical definition of absolute value we define a formula

|p| = p if p>= 0
-p if p< 0

in this we see the symbol of p and if it is positive we drop the absolute value bar otherwise in negative value we put the bars.
